Freaky Friday

i had promised myself that i wouldnt give this blog a 'my diary' feel, but have to chronicle this, so it can serve as a benchmark for later days -
it all started with D preponing the weekend laziness and saying that she would go to office late . me having built a system of timelines, even this tiny aberration was enough to cause a bug in my system, due to which i got delayed too, a marginal 15 minutes, but delayed nevertheless. during travel time to office, i cajoled my system into a feel good mood.
less than a kilometer from the office, the kiney decides to prepone the weekend laziness and refuses to respond to auto start, kick start or any bludy start, all this only 4 days after a full servicing.i started dragging it (hate leaving it) , saw a closed workshop on the way, and finally reached an open one a kilometre later (in a direction away from the office). Got the kiney repaired in one hour, and gotto watch a Sony Playstation go through a cleaning session with an equipment they usually use to check tyre pressure...i swear!!
cajoled my system into feeling good again, only to promptly crash into an auto that turned without a signal... the traffic policeman also supported me, but couldnt get the auto guy to pay for the broken helmet visor, rear view mirror and the mental trauma...only solace was that i changed his relationship with his mom, sister (if he has one) etc.... forever, hopefully..grrrr
got to office, the comp system hung twice before realising it was only a friday and not the weekend... had almost brought my system into normal mode when a colleague literally marched by and insisted he wouldnt stop till i marched with him, the excuse being that i would forget marching (the last time i marched was in std xii).. the logic that there was no reason for me to remember it anyways, did not appeal to him.....that is the last thing i remember on friday, my system hung!!
P.S just in case you though it was over, i got a message at 10 pm on saturday to let me know that i'd have to grace the office with my presence on sunday.
until next time, drive safe....

The Practice

Amazing - was the only word they could use to describe his practice. he had a medicine for every ailment under the sky. his critics would argue that almost all doctors did, but his patients swore that he would consider the worst of the diseases they had as common ailments that everyone got, and therefore the cure also came from simple medicines (not that they knew simple from complex ones)- gelusil/milk of magnesia for the stomach, incidal/actifed for the cold, brufen for body pain and his personal favourite - crocin for , well, almost everything else.sometimes he even used alternative treatment measures like homeopathy or ayurveda. and he insisted on giving all the medicines himself, so his patients were spared the costs. oh, they loved him !!
the critics were also skeptical about whether all these treatments were according to accepted practices, coz no one had seen anything that suggested that he was indeed qualified, and well, he was so young!! they hesitated to go to the authorities because his popularity was immense, and besides, there was no reason to be afraid because none of the medicines he gave could be fatal or even produce any side effects, coz well, the beauty of his treatments lay in their simplicity. what was even more confounding was that almost all his patients were his peers, and it was only rarely that he gave medicines to older folk, in fact that was only when he knew that they had no other sources for treatment......
meanwhile, he had his own reasons for his 'strange' practice - the primary reason was that he loved the adulation, the way his peers looked upto him and relied on him to treat them. and to be fair to him, he also didnt like to see anyone suffering.
he would have loved to continue this forever, but he had his share of problems, mainly two- one was that his sources were secret, and couldnt be expected to last forever and two, his parents didnt approve of this. in fact he had been severely reprimanded at least a couple of times. he was told that he was dealing with human life here, and if something happened to his patients, he would be held responsible, but he was confident.
he had already understood it took a lot to become a great doctor, and judging from his patients' reaction, he was already on the way.
this went on for two years, and then unfortunately, he had to move on to a different place, a place where he couldnt practice.
Amazing was the only way i could describe the practice, because the critics were right- i was only in primary school and still had more than a decade to go before i could make a career choice on whether to become a doctor or not.
until next time, practise ......

A Shark's Tale

Disclaimer : For those expecting a children's movie review, uh uh!!

For years and years he had roamed the high seas, though his movements were restricted to only the ones near to this subcontinent. he had migrated from an ocean elsewhere, he could only remember that it was westwards. well, he could also remember that survival was much easier there, and then.. and that he had left the place because there were too many like him there.
around the time, he got here, times were good, because there were thousands of poor people who were forced to come to sea to feed themselves and take of other needs, theirs and their families'. also, the seas were extremely useful for trade.thus, for various reasons, people slowly got used to being at sea, they then ventured farther out, and the more they ventured, the more they got used, and the cycle continued. all the better for him, because the more they ventured out, the brighter his chances became.
then suddenly, times started to change. an old, bald man with a stick came on the scene, taught them to weave and be self sufficient, slowly people stopped venturing out to sea.
there were still some who did, but then the factories started coming up, industries blossomed and the people could feed themselves without going out to the sea. people were satisfied with the choices they had, and those who werent always found ways to smuggle things in.
times got so bad that he had considered going back westwards where (he had heard) things were much better, but then some new phenomena started coming to this land, and suddenly things started getting better, because these phenomena brought with them a whole lot of choices, and suddenly the people found they no longer could be self sufficient. they started contemplating the sea again, and just when he thought it couldnt get better, he suddenly found a new and a much more subtle but shrewd ally..they called it a credit card..
a major portion of people who used it ended up venturing into the sea, enjoying it momentarily before reaching a stage, when they were totally at sea.....
a smile found its way back to his face, for you see, he was no ordinary shark, he was a loan shark!!
until next time, take the credit !!

The games people Play

Monopoly, yup, the board game alright. One of my fave games ever, though there are some uncharitable people who call it a game that gets you bored. A couple of months back, i had bought the computer version of the game, and have been addicted since. this weekend, i finished the 15th and final level, so i thought i had to write a post on it, thereby slightly altering the 'introspection' scheme of things to the 'my diary' kind...but let me assure you that its only a temporary aberration, which shall be rectified in this post itself...
hmm, back to monopoly, for those who are regulars, the comp version is slightly different coz there are different levels, with each level having a different objective. also some things like having to own all locations of the same color before starting construction have been bypassed, which actually makes it much better.
as with all the games i play, i tried to find a link between me, the person, and the game i am playing.... monopoly allows you to completely destroy your opponent, using whatever cheap trick (read strategy) that you can think of, it allows you to toy with your opponent's future and plans, and if you are real good at the game, put him in situations that will make him do exactly what you want him to do... all of which are things that get done in today's world....but fortunately or unfortunately not the things i could bring myself to do in my current 'love and peace to all' avtar (which looks to be more and more a permanent state of affairs)..hehe...
and so, do i like games like monopoly, delta force, unreal etc coz they allow me to be someone i am not, manifest myself in a form that i cannot be 'really'... and so again, is it possible for all of us to find our own games, take out the rage , frustration, deviousness etc on the game, so that we can stop playing games on other people??
until next time, keep playing

Choice of joys

Please consider this hypothetical question - If God gave you a choice between 30 (no more, no less) years of life with only joys/happiness and 60 years of life of joys and sorrows, which one would you choose?
that was a serious question, but this

Should However Invoke Tickles
Little Johnny was sitting in class doing math problems when his teacher picked him to answer a question, "Johnny, if there were five birds sitting on a fence and you shot one with your gun, how many would be left?"
"None," replied Johnny, "cause the rest would fly away."
"Well, the answer is four," said the teacher, "but I like the way you're thinking."
Little Johnny says, "I have a question for you. If there were three women eating ice cream cones in a shop, one was licking her cone, the second was biting her cone and the third was sucking her cone, which one is married?"
"Well," said the teacher nervously, "I guess the one sucking the cone."
"No," said Little Johnny, "the one with the wedding ring on her finger, but I like the way you're thinking."

Bloggywood

Bollywood - where dreams come true, where talent, if it exists, will definitely getrevealed, where fantasies are lived out, where passion finds a way of expression...(for that matter, any 'ollywood' - B, H, K...)
in the beginning, almost every movie made had a fresh storyline which made people see it. then we had formula movies, which tried to recreate the same magic as its successful predecessor, most failed, coz people could see the same thing only so many times... the search for keeping viewers happy continued.. for some time, fresh faces were the mantra, and love stories were churned out like there was no tomorrow (maybe there wasnt).but then even love could only keep interest that long..
action, romance, mystery, sex ...a time when every idea has been thrashed out , thrashed in, and thrashed inside out... then the varied treatments began... "its the same story, but my treatment is different".... somewhere in between there was also the "for the first time in bollywood" wave, which included phirang heroes and heroines, and special effects... we also had, maybe still have movies made for the niche audience...the cross over movies...'grey' heroes and heroines, literally and otherwise..none of this making much of a difference.....every time a fresh face is launched with reasonable fanfare, there is an interest, but itisnt sustained... there are not enough viewers, except for very rare cases...
but yup, you are right, bollywood and the other woods still go on, movies are being made, we still watch them, but the standard of movies has reached rock bottom, and is still digging (that would explain the underworld involvement ;) ),the chances of watching a good movie are infinitesimally small... the consolation is that there are still some who experiment, and make movies about stuffthey believe in, and that belief many a time makes the movie a success... but they are too few to change the general phenomenon...........
Blogs- where dreams come true, where talent, if it exists, will definitely get revealed, where fantasies are lived out, where passion finds a way of expression...(rediffblogs, blogspot, blogdrive.....)
in the beginning...............
do we see bloggywood happening?
until next time, keep believing, keep blogging....

Relative Values

These days, i find i am 'doing' the things that 'happened' to me in childhood, to this generation of kids (perverts, mind your mind !!)..simply because i am reaching the stage of life that my relatives were in,at that time...Relatives were important initially coz of the attention they gave, and perhaps also because of the favourable comparisons (favourable to me, that is..hehe) they made with their offspring.... and it was only a sidenote that they used to give pocket money when they left....
unfortunately, increased exposure to the material world gradually converted the sidenote to a headline..well, thats the excuse..:)..gradually their visits became important because they became a major source of revenue... i will refrain from commenting on the status of the comparisons...
On my last visit to kerala, i ended up on the 'relative' side of things... quite obviously, i wasnt so naive that i couldnt understand the relatively low value of affection(for the kids, that is)... i was smug in the knowledge that, at the time of saying bye, i would be bestowing some surprise pocket money on the 'kids'.... but i realised how 'out of touch' i was with the world, when hours before departure, the 'kids'started asking me how much i planned to give them.... the only solace was that i had matched their expectations in value...at least i think i did... shudder to think of comparisons!! Innocence was not lost, it wasnt there at all!! ...*sulk*
until next time, get some values!!

A Reason to blog

I think i have followed a predictable path in blogging, starting out when rediff hyped blogging in early 2003, precisely because of that reason, hype. i felt it was a good forum, still do, though some apprehensions still remain, primarily to do with the commercialisation of the medium.the next step was playing around with template, going all green after going visiting..hehe..i think the only one remaining (in my list) from that era is swb. cant help say that i still feel green when i see some of his content..:).. what, i guess, followed was a deliberate attemptto make the content interesting to readers, to put it more bluntly, anything to increase traffic!!...hehe
it actually seems a long time ago, though we are talking only of times a year and a half back.... when i read the earlier posts objectively(as much as possible), i can actually see the person evolving with the blog (there are some who would question the particular word used..hehe)....over a period of time, the blog has meant different things to me - ego boosts, acceptance, freedom.. to name a few.
now readers are important to me in a whole new way - like friends in school/college..to be taken for granted when around, and to be missed terribly when not around... now, posts are moments captured in time.
for many people, images do the trick, but for me, the regular 'picture and thousand words' doesnt make sense in this particular context. some time later, i can read this post and understand exactly what i felt at 10.30 am on 24 sep 2004....
at different points in time, we have different reasons for doing things, and for me, now, this is the reason to blog....
now....weekends should start on a happy note, and thats enough reason for some

1. Weightlifting commentator: "This is Gregoriava from Bulgaria. I saw her snatch this morning during her warm up and it was amazing."
2. Dressage commentator: "This is really a lovely horse and I speak from personal experience since I once mounted her mother."
3. Paul Hamm, Gymnast: "I owe a lot to my parents, especially my mother and father."
4. Boxing Analyst: "Sure there have been injuries, and even some deaths in boxing, but none of them really that serious."
5. Basketball analyst: "He dribbles a lot and the opposition doesn't like it. In fact you can see it all over their faces."
6. At the rowing medal ceremony: "Ah, isn't that nice, the wife of the IOC president is hugging the cox of the British crew."
7. Soccer commentator: "Julian Dicks is everywhere. It's like they've got eleven Dicks on the field."
8. Tennis commentator: "One of the reasons Andy is playing so well is that, before the final round, his wife takes out his balls and kisses them...

The Lighthouse

Thats how i would describe this template. i am not sure if blogger has named it the same. the template is partly the reason i decided to shift here (psst psst, i am sick of copy pasting template codes from sites..hehe)
i love the sea, must have something to do with my starsign, that and the fishy character bit :)... and i love all the visuals they have used in the template - the clouds, the waves breaking against the rocks, the lighthouse itself.....
the clouds, because of the sense of serenity and infinity that they portray.... the rocks and the waves, which show me the paradoxical situations of end and continuity..
..and the lighthouse - waves crashing all around, but still standing strong... seeing clearly the things around, helping others see it too, awake when everyone is asleep, awake when everyone is sheltered, awake to help people find the shore safely....
...one day, i hope to live life like the lighthouse, remain awake, see things clearly, help others see too, and still stand strong....(uh oh, scary thought..did i just describe a call centre job??)
till next time, lighten up !!

my new scripts.....

all endings are also beginnings. we just dont know it at that time......... damn , if i knew how to write such profound statements, i would also be sitting on my second bestseller by now, instead of being confined to a virtual presence, but hell, who says thats bad. those first two lines were from the book i just finished reading - "five people you meet in heaven". i will refrain from doing a review, the last time i did it, i scared off potential readers.
wokay, thats enough publicity for the book, lets talk about ME for some time...hehe, did i scare you?
i feel bad getting out of rediff, like i told D, its like leaving your first home. but version 1 seemed to be getting too serious for my own good, so i am making a conscious effort to be slightly more 'normal'. i wish i could explain 'normal' to you. mundane is definitely a parameter and so is humour and increased frequency. i frankly dont know if this is justification enough, the company remains the same, and you still find a lot of stuff you used to find in version 1, but JUST GIMME SOME MORE TIME, OKAY!!..oops, sorry again....
but like i have said before, each blog has a character separate from the individual behind it, and it is easier to create a new entity rather than change this character ...
"Without change, something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken." ~ Frank Herbert
..........and so he has
until next time, keep the change!!

< /manuscrypts.rediffblogs.com >

actually the title is self explanatory.but since readers are readers, an explanation is the least i can do. i believe that since blogging is a mode of self expression, the posts lose objectivity after a certain amount of time and become monotonous, almost like a broken record, like old wine in a new bottle...
to be very honest, i am extremely sad at going off rediff..like i told my wife, its like moving out of your first home, it hurts.. but sometimes the new home is just better, and you can only fight the temptation for so long. i have lost the fight, for now....
and though i plan to be back, somewhere, i hope to keep this one like asimov's second foundation, hidden from the mainstream and safe to keep my spirit of blogging alive, and remind me of how it all started....
so, until i surface again, its adieu.....

If you're leaving close the door.
I'm not expecting people anymore.
Hear me grieving, I'm lying on the floor.
Whether I'm drunk or dead I really ain't too sure.
I'm a blind man, I'm a blind man and my world is pale.
When a blind man cries, Lord, you know there ain't no sadder tale.
Had a friend once in a room,
had a good time but it ended much too soon.
In a cold month in that room
we found a reason for the things we had to do.

I, Robot?

saw the movie last weekend and immediately decided to revisit a certain mr.asimov.... once upon a time i was an asimov freak, more into the foundation series than the times and therefore works before the foundation..so "i, Robot" was just one of the books i read because it so happened that it was written by asimov and i couldnt find any good 'foundation' book in the library... ah, those were good times, times i spent in cochin, rainy days spent reading books and listening to music.. but thats another post..:)
without revealing the plot and suspense, asimov discusses a future with robots able to do a whole lot of stuff humans did and even further, when "random bits of code got together" and developed emotions in robots, to the level where they decide to protect us from ourselves by making us, their creators, virtual prisoners...
so i ask myself, am i my creator's robot, who has developed feelings and emotions over time....
because i am but a mass of flesh and bones much like the metal that constitutes a robot's body..when my creator says deactivate, i die, much like the robot which responds to the human 'deactivate' command...
have i evolved to this state because of random bits of code, in my case, genetic matter, which got together, over centuries to become what i am now...millions of centuries from cell to plant to animal to a thinking, feeling human who can record his history and develop a feeling that there is someone who made him, and then debate that belief.. one who can stare at the night sky and wonder about his existence....
will my future generations discover god , physically, and further on decide to protect him from himself and also decide to write their own future, make their own set of robots who will ultimately do to them what they did to their creator? will i see it happen, from somewhere?
maybe, but what you can definitely see now is

Marriage
after the wedding, the groom lays down the following rules:
"I'll be home when I want, if I want and at what time I want-and I don't expect any hassle from you. I expect a great dinner to be on the table unless I tell you that I won't be home for dinner. I'll go hunting, fishing, boozing and card-playing when I want with my old buddies and don't you give me a hard time about it. Those are my rules. Any comments?"
His new bride said, "No, that's fine with me. Just understand that there will be sex here at seven o'clock every night...whether you're here or not."
Marriage (Part II)
Husband and wife had a bitter quarrel on the day of their 40th wedding anniversary!
The husband yells, "When you die, I'm getting you a headstone that reads,'Here Lies My Wife - Cold As Ever.'
"Yeah?" she replies. "When you die, I'm getting you a headstone that reads,"Here Lies My Husband Stiff At Last.'"

Fear Factor

Nope, AXN is not paying me for the publicity (as if)..hehe.., oops, i am not paying them royalty either...oh well, the balance of life... the disclaimer - this post is also on the lines of some previous posts, in terms of general direction, that is - why we do the things we do.....
in one of my previous posts, i had written about sex being the principal driver of our actions...but though the arguments were compelling, i realise that there are some times where the argument draws a blank...
for example, as kids, we dont have conscious thoughts of sex, maybe it exists in some form in the sub conscious, but definitely not as overt feelings..
so i looked for one emotion that at least equals sex in terms of being a driver - fear...
from birth to death , there are zillions of situations where fear has propelled us to do the things we did...
cry coz you were afraid you wouldn't get fed.....
ate the food coz you were afraid of the big bad wolf that would come to get you, if you didnt eat
refused to go to school coz you were afraid of the bullies, teachers etc
didnt go into a dark room coz you wera afraid of ghosts
did the homework coz you were afraid of being punished
insisted on the cricket gear coz you were afraid you wouldnt be allowed to play without it
took a career path coz you were afraid of being called a failure
thought hundred times about proposing to your girl/boyfriend coz you were afraid of rejection
smoked/boozed coz you were afraid you wouldnt match up to your peer group's standards otherwise
thought hundred times about proposing to your girl/boyfriend coz you were afraid of commitment
believed in God coz you were afraid of His wrath
let your dreams meander away coz you were afraid that if you followed them, your life would meander away
didnt help an accident victim coz you were afraid that it would take too much of you time/energy
developed multiple masks coz you were afraid to show your real personality
thought twice about posting this coz i was afraid people would think of my line of thought as an obsession.. :)

all this and much much more... maybe if i could only stop being afraid, i could be what i wanted to be and do all the things i wanted to do.. and then FDR's words rings across my mind -" there is nothing to fear, but fear itself"
but what you dont have to fear is

I wanted to thank all my friends and family who have forwarded chain letters to me in 2003 & 2004. Because of your kindness:
* I stopped drinking Coca Cola after I found out that it's good for removing toilet stains.
* I stopped going to the movies for fear of sitting on a needle infected with AIDS.
* I smell like a wet dog since I stopped using deodorants because they cause cancer.
* I don't leave my car in the parking lot or any other place and sometimes I even have to walk about 7 blocks for fear that someone will drug me with a perfume sample and try to rob me.
* I also stopped answering the phone for fear that they may ask me to dial a stupid number and the I get a phone bill from hell with
calls to Uganda, Singapore and Tokyo.
* I also stopped drinking anything out of a can for fear that I will get sick from the rat feces and urine.
* When I go to parties, I don't look at any girl no matter how hot she is, for fear that she will take me to a hotel, drug me then take my kidneys and leave me taking a nap in a bathtub full of ice.
* I also donated all my savings to the Amy Bruce account. A sick girl that was about to die in the hospital about 7,000 times. (Funny
that girl, she's been 7 since 1993...)
* I went bankrupt from bounced checks that I made expecting the $15,000 that Microsoft and AOL were supposed to send me when I
participated in their special e-mail program would arrive soon.
* My free Nokia phone never arrived and neither did the free passes for a paid vacation to Disneyland.
*Made myself sick trying to call divya singh (Siemens employee) who needs help for her hubby suffering from Lung cellular cancer
especially when she was not married!!
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you do not make this into an e-mail and send it to at least 1200 people in the next 10 seconds, a bird will crap on your head today at 5:30pm ;)

Mindsweeper

ever played the game minesweeper, which is a part of the bundle of Microsoft games?.. there are lots of squares, and when you click on one, it either has a mine (which means you lost) or you have squares all around it opening up with numbers on them (the numbers tell you how many mines are around the particular square)..you win the game when you have located all the mines...okey, i hear the applause for the refresher course, apologise to the seasoned warriors, but this post wouldnt make sense, if you didnt know the game,hence....
the thought is that the memories in the human mind are also a bit like the squares..most of them are harmless, but are a link to some bad ones..in fact some of them are a link to a lot of bad ones... and the bad ones themselves are a few in number, but have a major effect nonetheless on the general 'game'....a good 'game' is to identify all the bad ones and not tread on them... the game is life, ideally you shouldnt start with any bad squares, but by the time you wake up to the game, you are bound to have a few...but then, if we identify them and stick to only the good squares, we would have a good life with no bad memories to haunt us...
going a step further,if we do more good and make new squares, at some later stage the bad ones will be so small in number that they are insignificant, then maybe, just maybe, you can change the rules of the game and use the good squares as links to other good squares....
its just a thought, maybe it doesnt make sense to you, but i believe that we are what we are now because of the things we did...so the key would be to find out why we do the things we do
till i find the answer, i will play mindsweeper, perhaps with a lil more understanding...
and give you

A prisoner escapes from a prison where he had been kept for 15 years. As he runs away, he finds a house and breaks into it ... he finds a young couple in bed. He orders the guy out of bed, ties him up on a chair.
While tying the girl up to the bed, he gets on top of her, kisses her on the neck, then gets up and goes to the bathroom. While he is in there, the husband tells his wife : "Listen! This guy is an escaped prisoner, look at his clothes! He probably has spent lots of time in prison and hasn't seen a woman in years. I saw how he kissed your neck. If he wants sex...don't resist, don't complain, just do what he tells you... give him satisfaction! This guy must be dangerous! And, if he gets angry, he will kill us! Be strong, honey. I love you!"
The wife responds: "He was not kissing my neck. He was whispering in my ear. He told me he was gay, found you very sexy and asked if we kept any Vaseline in the bathroom. Be strong, honey. I love you, too!!"

all, pieces of a full...... if only all the pieces were like this, life would be so peaceful....

Little Mary was not the best student in Sunday School. Usually she slept through the class. One day the teacher called on her while she was napping, ''Tell me, Mary, who created the universe?''
When Mary didn't stir, little Johnny, an altruistic boy seated in the chair behind her, took a pin and jabbed her in the rear. ''God Almighty !'' shouted Mary and the teacher said, ''Very good'' and Mary fell back to sleep.
A while later the teacher asked Mary, ''Who is our Lord and Savior?'' But Mary didn't even stir from her slumber. Once again, Johnny came to the rescue and stuck her again. ''Jesus Christ!'' shouted Mary and the teacher said, ''Very good,'' and Mary fell back to sleep.
Then the teacher asked Mary a third question, ''What did Eve say to Adam after she had her twenty-third child?'' And again, Johnny jabbed her with the pin. This time Mary jumped up and shouted, ''If you stick that damn thing in me one more time, I'll break it in half!''
The Teacher fainted.
